Ultimate Baja California -
Sea Kayak, Hike, Swim, Bike
Baja California, Mexico:
A sea kayaking paradise of translucent waters, uninhabited islands and a plethora of wildlife that seems to be omnipresent, from whales that migrate into its cool waters to sea lions and many species of sea birds. Below the surface, the magic of snorkelling overloads the senses as triggerfish, rays and moray eels appear before our eyes in less than ten feet of water.
Baja, as it is referred to, is a perfect setting for daily and multi-day sea kayaking trips. Its 1.900 miles (3000km) long coastline begins in the border town of Tijuana, Mexico, and a mere 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, California and ends in the appropriately named Land's End near Cabo San Lucas.
Our focus however is the area close to La Paz, one of Baja's largest cities, which has managed to retain that small town feel, yet, providing the adventure traveller with a variety of activities and an excellent infrastructure. From our cosy Bed and Breakfast run by a French native, we begin a journey that is never too far from the gentle breaking of waves on white sand beaches.
Due to the relatively calm waters of the Sea of Cortez, water sports such as sea kayaking and snorkelling are a must. But our focus is also on the incredible potential for trekking in the cooler months such as December and January when daytime highs are pleasant.
Trails wind through the desert environment where barrel cactus and other incredible survivors of this amazing world live practically free of human interference.
Our guide for Baja is Hiram, a native of La Paz and an incredibly enthusiastic mountain biker and outdoorsman. Due to his many years spent both in the hills and mountains around La Paz and on the Sea of Cortez, you will hopefully get a better understanding of what Baja is all about.
