NEW: Hiking in Kamchatka
- Hiking the Ring of Fire
With 10% of the world's volcanoes, the Kamchatka Peninsula is part of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where volcanic eruptions are not uncommon.
Nine time zones away from Moscow, Kamchatka is as far from civilization as one can get in this part of the world. With just about 500 kilometers of roads, and only about 400, 000 inhabitants, (half of whom live in the main city Petropavlosk-Kamchatsky), for a 1200 kilometer long peninsula, overcrowding is not an issue.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is about water, fire and wildlife. Nearly 14,000 rivers and creeks flow through this land, creating a rich habitat for the brown bear (Ursus arctos beringianus), moose, fox, wolf and deer. The waters are rich in trout, salmon and other fish species, making for excellent fishing.
With several UNESCO World Heritage site designations and a Federal Biosphere Reserve, many of the areas open for hiking have been preserved.
Pristine landscapes unfold, with little modification by the human hand allowing visitors to observe unhabituated animals in their intact environment.
Because of careful planning and close collaboration with our hosts in Kamchatka, discovering this beautiful and wild part of Russia is no longer the ordeal it once was.
English-speaking guides and naturalist will accompany each group, transmitting their knowledge, translating and overseeing camps and providing a safe environment for our guests.
This is Russia of course! An open mind, sense of adventure and adaptability are necessary characteristics to poses in order to enjoy a true wilderness journey brimming with stream crossings, rain showers, helicopter rides, wildlife and life itself.
