Slovenia: Ultimate Slovenia and the Julian Alps
DATES: July 13 - 22, 2008
PRICES: CAD 2830 (US $2700)
So where exactly is Slovenia?
You may have heard that a few years ago, but Slovenia is definitely on the map as one of Europe's best-know little secrets. Tucked against a stunning backdrop of both
mountains and sea, Slovenia has many centuries of being
at the centre of European history.
The Julian Alps are a magical part of the Eastern Alps.
Hikers will be be mesmerized by beautiful emerald lakes, medieval villages tucked away in deep valleys, and stunning trails, which allow for views out to the Dolomites and the Adriatic Sea on clear days.
The hiking trails in Triglav National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) wind below snow-capped mountains, through deep gorges and around mountain lakes.
Completing this quintessential alpine experience is, of course, the hospitality of our Slovenian hosts.
Lying at the heart of central Europe, Slovenia has benefited from numerous influences, which can be seen in its architecture, culture, food and its people. Walking, skiing, and 'la dolce vita' have long been part of Slovenia's culture too.
Slovenia has also been a major battle field during the Great War, described in Ernest Hemingway's classic: A Farewell to Arms.
Our trip starts in charming Ljubljana, the ancient capital of Slovenia. We will have ample time to explore the city before we transfer to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia's best known ski resort. The start of our hut trek is the Tamar Valley, where we begin the traverse of the Julian Alps, following trails built during the Great War, stopping overnight in several of the outstanding Slovenian mountain huts.
Our journey comes to an end in Bled, nestled below a fairy-tale castle on the shores of a turquoise lake. Bled, known for its curative waters, tranquil setting and excellent hospitality will be the icing on the cake of your Julian Alps discovery.

"...I wanted to thank both of you for a fabulous holiday. I knew from the initial emails that I had found an outfitter that worked for me and now after the trip I knew I was right. I enjoyed the TMB and the local experience. It is obvious that both of you take pride in organizing all aspects of the trip -- from the accommodations and food which are representative of each locale, to the route which changes with the group's ability and weather, to staff (Duncan was great.) and to making yourselves available for minor client needs as searching for boots! (Someone had to spur the local economy.) .." Anna Iacucci, NY
The Tour du Mont Blanc Trek offers some of the most spectacular alpine landscapes, hiking over several major mountain passes while enjoying breathtaking views of the giants of the Alps.
From the mountaineering capital of the world, Chamonix, France, the Tour du Mont Blanc takes you from alpine meadows to the rugged, mineral world of the high mountains, and back down to the valley where tradition has gone uninterrupted for hundreds of years. During the summer months of July and August, alpine flora and fauna are prolific and wildflowers line the trails of the Tour du Mont Blanc.

"...Cathy and I became great fans of Alpine Interface as a result of our experience on the TMB and again, you did not disappoint. Louis, you were a wonderful leader. In spite of changes (due to our situation) to our itinerary and activities, you were unflappable...flexible and considerate in every instance[..]
Karin, as always, you were most helpful in assisting me with the planning and logistics of the trip, answering all of my questions and providing helpful information.
The food... it was wonderful and abundant. Meals were every bit as good as the brochure advertised, perhaps better. Mealtimes were always a pleasure both for the great food and the good conversation. The lodging ...every hotel was clean and quite comfortable. As I expressed to you at the time, the stay at Marmara did push my comfort level due to the electric/water/bee situation. It was an adventure for one night (and the location was outstanding), but two nights would have been unpleasant for me. I thank you for making the change to our itinerary that allowed us to move to Lutro one night early.
The itinerary ...the trips to the museum and to Knossos added greatly to the trip. Thank you Louis for getting us to Knossos on the last day in spite of our time constraints. You could have blown it off, but you didn't and I can't thank you enough for that. The scenery on the walks was breathtaking. [...]
The people ...the Cretan people were the friendliest, most helpful and accommodating folks I have ever met. I will long remember them, especially Captain George.
In summary ...The tour was wonderful. I would recommend this trip and Alpine Interface without any hesitation. Thank you for another great experience that I will remember and cherish forever. Who knows, perhaps another Alpine Interface tour next year..." Jane D'Agostino, NY
As hiking tours in Greece go, Crete is a must:
It is a hikers' and walker's paradise with over 300 days of sunshine per year.
Iraklio, the capital of Crete, has multiple flights to and from Athens and other European cities and is the beginning of our journey. At the end of our trek we will have the opportunity to explore the incredible Minoan ruins of Knossos and Phaetsos.
From this vibrant port city we start our trek, where the tranquillity and cool breezes of the coast allow us to take in the spectacle of huge, white lime stone cliffs contrasting with the azure waters of the Libyan Sea.
Nights are spent in seaside villages where most are only accessible by ferry boat or by foot. Simple yet very comfortable, our hotels have been chosen for their hospitality
and cuisine which consists of grilled fish and the large variety of Crete's exquisitely prepared vegetable dishes

The Great Dolomites Traverse
DATES: July 19-26, 2008
Prices: CAD $2625 (US $2500)
The Dolomites have it all: Dramatic views, stunning sunsets, copious amounts of fine food and wine, hiking for all ability levels and a combination of Germanic precision and Italian flair.
With kilometres of well-maintained trails, friendly, comfortable mountain huts, and geological wonders such as karstic plateaux and towering rock faces, our walks are as diverse as the cultures and languages of the Dolomites.
South Tyrol, which the Austrians had to cede to Italy after loosing WWI, has been a major battle ground with fortified tunnels and mountain-top gun emplacements, that can still be seen in the mountains today.
Despite first-class infrastructure and with major international airports a few hours away, the Dolomites still see far fewer visitors than one would expect.
Our hikes have been chosen for the diversity of the terrain and to incorporate the rich and complex history of this region.
Starting in Castelrotto (Kastelruth), our inn-to-inn trek will take in the most important peaks and hikes on offer.
