Recommended reading

The following books are some of many we would recommend for reading before coming to Patagonia. Some are what we would call 'background' reading, some are specifical for the trip you will be doing, and all are excellent preparation and fun to read, counting the days before your holiday begins...

Trekking and Travel Guide Books, Natural History Guide Books, Patagonia

Book Title USA Canada UK
Lonely Planet, Clem Lindenmayer:
Trekking in the Patagonian Andes

Although published quite a long time ago, most of the trek descriptions are still accurate, and the photos are fantastic, given you a good idea about trekking in Patagonia.
Obviously, descriptions of towns etc. are out of date, and not very complete. Other, more general travel oriented guide books are recommended to accompany the Patagonian trekking guide.
Moon Handbooks: Patagonia
"...From visiting Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city known as "the uttermost part of the earth," and taking the scenic ferry route from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales to hiking on Argentina's Moreno Glacier, Moon Handbooks Patagonia is the guide to the best the country has to offer, both on and off the beaten path..."
(Editorial Review)

Time Out: Patagonia
This book is a perfect 'companion guide' when travelling in Patagonia.
Detailed description of bustling tourist centres, and off the beaten path little villages. It describes everything Patagonia has to offer, but does not go into detail when it comes to accommodation and restaurant choices.
Colin Henderson:
Los Glaciares Travel & Trekking Guide

A highly updated guide for trekking and mountaineering in the very famous National Park of Patagonia. Covers specially the area of El Chalten, El Calafate, Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and Southern Ice Cap

Carlos Brebbia:
Patagonia - A Forgotten Land. From Magellan to Peron
Spanning nearly five centuries, it combines travel narrative, military history, and an explorer's catalog of curiosities...The many illustrations, including historical maps, drawings, and early photographs, are a good resource...Recommended. General collections/public libraries. --Choice, May 2007
Marcelo Beccaceci:
Natural Patagonia / Patagonia natural

This is a natural history guidebook (bilingual, english/spanish). The book is rich with details on the geological origins and evolution of Patagonia, and reading it will help make the reader an educated traveler, one who will go gently and preserve it.
Naturalist-writer-photographer Marcelo Beccaceci has given us a splendid book on Patagonia that is graced by interesting, informative easy-to-read text worthy of the photos.

The landscape photos conjure up the land perfectly.

Patagonia: Travel Novels, Mountaineering and more

Book Title USA Canada UK

Bruce Chatwin: In Patagonia
"...In Patagonia is Bruce Chatwin's exquisite account of his journey through "the uttermost part of the earth," that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome and Charles Darwin formed part of his "survival of the fittest" theory.
Chatwin's evocative descriptions and enchanting anecdotes make In Patagonia an exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land.

Paul Theroux:
The Old Patagonian Express

Starting with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, Theroux winds up on the poky, wandering Old Patagonian Express steam engine, which comes to a halt in a desolate land of cracked hills and thorn bushes. But with Theroux the view along the way is what matters: the monologuing Mr. Thornberry in Costa Rica, the bogus priest of Cali, and the blind Jorge Luis Borges, who delights in having Theroux read Robert Louis Stevenson to him.
Nick Reding:
The last Cowboys at the End of the World: Gauchos of Patagonia

Some people will go to the ends of the earth for a good story; Nick Reding went to the end of the road, which turned out to be one and the same. When the Pan American Highway was extended into Chilean Patagonia, it exposed a people long believed to be extinct--the gauchos. While the gauchos had struggled for centuries with the hantavirus, extreme isolation, and visits by the devil, what the road brought was truly overwhelming. Amazon Review
Alan Kearney:
Mountaineering in Patagonia

Thorough history of some of the most dramatic ascents of several Patagonian peaks

Patagonia: Picture Books, Coffee Table Books, Flora & Fauna

Book Title USA Canada UK

Hubert Stadler, Michael Alhoff : Patagonia
This book is more than a beautiful coffee table book:
Wild and remote, Patagonia is a region that captures the natural drama of South America like no other—from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific, from the vast wind-swept stretches of the pampa grasslands to the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego and the treacherous tip of Cape Horn. The jagged granite cliffs of the FitzRoy Massif, the mighty glaciers, the still mountain lakes of the Andes and the impenetrable rainforests cast a dream-like spell on all who venture here.

Jasmine Rossi:
The Wild Shores of Patagonia

"Jasmine Rossi's photographs of Patagonia's coastal wild animals and seascapes are both beautiful and shocking. She portrays its cycles of birth and death and of storm and calm with rare technical skill and a text that enlarges her photographic windows with unusual accuracy." -William Conway (40 years director of Wildlife Conservation Society).

Tim Hauf : Patagonia
"...I recommend this book highly. Tim Hauf's remarkable photography captures the many regions of Patagonia - the diversity of landscapes, the various moods and raw beauty, a stark grandeur. The uncivilized immensity of mountains and water, sometimes filled with icebergs other times with whitecaps, some misty above the power of falls, leaves the viewer in awe. We are surprised and delighted by the variety of images, from the smallest of flowering bushes to the romping of guanacos, but overall we are speechless before the vastness of empty space..." Enrique Couve:
Birds of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego
"This is an excellent photo guide covering the southern half of Chile and Argentina, along with the Falkland Islands and the sub-Antarctic seas. Over 300 species are shown with multiple color photos of great quality. Another 130+ species have brief accounts in the appendix. Most birds have two pages of photos. Typically, there is one large (half-page) photo with another 5-7 photos showing the various plumages for gender, age, and subspecies. "

Maria Baez Kijac:
The South American Table

The book contains authentic flavorful recipes from South America.

Maria Baez Kijac is a food writer, cooking instructor and culinary historian. She was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador and spent 15 years researching this book.
This cookbook helps people enjoy a variety of dishes without focusing too greatly on one area of the continent.
Her recipes are easy-to-follow and extremely flavorful! I was happy to see some of my favorites in here too!
